Bel Air Residence by Claudia Afshar: a sanctuary of lightness and artistic flair

An authority in the high-end interior design sector, Claudia Afshar is distinguished by a rich background and a flair that knows little competition. Indeed, her mother’s award-winning design firm, Living in Space, has been the ground for her training, while her father’s extensive property firm has been fundamental for her knowledge of architectural design and ground-up development. Growing up between London and the British countryside, Claudia, now based in Los Angeles, in 2013 gave rise to a company endowed with an international soul. Her projects, filled with global inspirations, attention to details and profound understanding of the context, are always clean and yet sumptuous, timeless and yet functional. Along with creativity and strong expertise, attention to sustainability is one more feature covered in every project signed by Claudia, who in 2021 was awarded as the first Los Angeles-based designer to align with the Good Future Design Alliance (GFDA) – a community of design and build professionals committed to reducing the total waste amount by 50% over the next five years. All this translates into a diverse and transnational clientele, from bespoke brands to high-end property developers, from celebrities of the star system to family units, all recognizing in Claudia a unique ability to craft tailor-made environments attentive to every aspect of design.

Among the latest projects by Claudia Afshar Design, the renovation of a residence in Bel Air, California, works as a perfect illustration of the firm’s design philosophy. The majestic property of 8000 sqft comprises five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, with the formal living to be finished. The inspiration and starting point for the development of the project has been the client’s request for a refined home, with a glamorous and lively atmosphere. Thus, Claudia and her team’s goal was that of transforming the already existing areas into a place out of time where all the family members could feel a sense of home.

An integral part of the interiors is with no doubt the chromatic palette. In this case, the selection option has been an elegant scale of greys and whites, which enhances the original stone and wooden floors. The white marble with thin veins and delicate graphics of the custom-made furnishing stand out on the pure white background. Such a colour scheme also gives depth and balance to the whole, thank to the contrast with the vivid art collection of the owners and with some dark coloured décor pieces.

Every single part of the house is curated in detail, from the upholstery to the finishing of the windows. Details are, indeed. Claudia’s signature. However, when asked to choose her favourite space of the residence, her answer was the dining room. A seamless blend of lightness and creative verve, the core space of this home features 14 ft bespoke dining table made of Arabescato marble, monochromatic grey dining chairs characterized by modern and clean lines, a gloss painted ceiling and the linear pendant. Around this rhythm are positioned the two commissioned pieces by Flores. Finally, it is worth mentioning the impressive piece by Mr. Brainwash in the entryway where the juxtaposition of bright and more neutral tones results in a wonderful contrast.
